HOW TO CALCULATE HOW MANY BAGS OF BLOWN INSULATION FOR CEILING
QUESTION FROM GREG SHAW FROM ARLINGTON, TX:
How many bags of blown - in insulation to cover 6 inches for a 2070 sq ft home?
ANSWER FROM THE INSULATION DOCTOR:
Thank you for your question. Unfortunately I cannot give you a definitive answer due to the fact that there are a number of insulation materials that can be blown into an attic, all of which have different size bags and different coverages. If you look on the back of the bags you are either planning to use, or are going to have used, there is a scale "per thousand square feet of coverage". It will tell you how many bags are required for a particular settled R-value that needs to be installed for any thickness.
If you are having a contractor install your insulation, he should be able to provide you with a copy of the coverages of the material he is planning to use. Another good way to insure that you receive the insulation you pay for is to request that cardboard rulers be placed thruout the attic showing the depth of the new insulation.
Hope this helps.
