INSULATING BARN FOUNDATION

QUESTION FROM KEVIN, BROOKLYN, MI: At the farm, I want to insulate the foundation walls of the barn. I was thinking about using
one inch foam board, and the part above grade, would need to be covered with stucco (or something). I would like to get an estimate to have this done.

We don't do that kind of work and I really don't know of anyone who does. But I would recommend that you could do it yourself by purchasing some 1" foil-backed Dow board (available at Home Depot or Lowes and comes in a 4x8 sheet -- runs about $16 a sheet). This is a closed-cell styrofoam. You would put the foil to the outside and you can paint it prior to doing it if you wanted to. It is fairly weather-resistant. Normally the method of installing it is to dig a trench around the foundation as deep as the foundation or a minimum of 12". Place the Dow board against the foundation and backfill with the dirt you originally removed to make the trench.
