INSULATING CEILING OF A MORTON POLE BARN BUILDING
QUESTION FROM MICHAEL OF MUNCIE, INDIANA:
I have a Morton pole building with rafters 8' apart. Morton finished the ceiling with their metal.
I'm concerned about the weight of blown cellulose but not crazy about blown fiberglass and it's characteristics.
Any thoughts to what might work best to insulate attic?
ANSWER FROM THE INSULATION DOCTOR:
I am not familiar with a Morton pole building. Because the ceiling surface is metal, you should be aware that most cellulose products contain boric acid as a fire retardant and that this boric acid could tend to attack the metal.
Regarding the weight on the metal ceiling, it should not be a problem if the metal is of a sufficient gauge to support the weight of the insulation you intend to install or that it is interlocked, or fastened together, to redistribute any weight.
Have you contacted Morton to ask them? They would know the weight-load capabilities of the ceiling and might have recommendations for you.
Hope this helps.
